How To Find Out What iPhone You Have

Did you know that Apple Inc has released nearly 29 iPhone models since 2007? And with the hearsay of an iPhone SE 3 and other releases soon, this figure is definitely going to increase. All iPhones run on a mobile operating system which Apple names “iOS”.

A new version of iOS is launched every year, each having more features than the former. Every new iPhone comes out with the latest version of iOS, and the older iPhones usually get a software update to the latest version.

In this vast sea of iPhone models, you might be wondering which iPhone you’ve got. Knowing your model number is essential because certain models may not be compatible with few latest features. For example, the iPhone 11 does not support Touch ID, etc. Also, certain older models may not be able to use the latest updates.

The model number also plays an important role when you put your iPhone for sale Because the Buyer wants to know exactly what they are getting. There can be a lot other reasons why you might need to tell the difference between iPhones. This article is all about how to find out what iPhone you have.

How to Find Out What iPhone you Have Got

Even experienced users can find it hard to identify iPhone apart by sight. This is because Apple updates the iPhone every year, but it doesn’t necessarily make changes in the design. The significant change can be on the inside, such as faster new components, etc.

The easiest way to identify an iPhone was to check the ‘A’ model number on its back, and this article includes the A numbers for every iPhone. But lately Apple does not print ‘A’ numbers. So, for those with recent iPhone models, or who find the number too small to read, there are other methods. You can either check in Settings, or look at the phone’s shape and external features and make an identification.

1. Look in Settings for the Model

Looking in the Settings is the simplest method.

Step 1: Open the Settings app.

Step 2: Tap General.

Step 3: Select About.

Step 4: Among top entries you’ll see “Model Name”, followed by your model. For example, iPhone 12 Pro maybe displayed next to “Model Name”.

Some older iPhones do not show the iPhone model name.

Step 5: Below the “Model Name” is the “Model Number” (also known as the SKU). It’s a combination of letters and numbers that provides a more precise identification as it specifies storage capacity and even color.

The model number is available in both older and new phones.

Step 6: Tap on the SUK to display the A number instead, which can also be used to identify which iPhone model you have.

The settings page also provides information regarding the device’s capacity, which is listed a little further down.

Settings app is extremely helpful when it comes to identifying what iPhone you have. But it is dysfunctional when you’re trying to identify a bricked device or one you can’t unlock. Hence, it would be better to move on to the visual identification chart in the next section.

2. Look on your device

Step 1: Look for identification number printed on the back starting with the letter A, and labelled ‘Model’. For example, “Model A1634”. This is called a number.

If you do not find the A number printed on the back your iPhone is an iPhone 8 or later.

Step 2: On an iPhone 8 or later, remove the SIM tray and look for the A number in the SIM tray slot. The A number is on the upper side—the side with the display.

In both the cases make sure there is bright light overhead. Do not hesitate to get the help of a magnifying glass as the print is small. Once you have got the A number, check it against this list to see which model you’ve got.

Note: There are multiple A numbers for some iPhones referring to various versions for different territories, network standards and so on.

  • Original iPhone

The original iPhone from 2007 can be easily identified. It has a gray/silver rear with a black band across the bottom.

  • iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS

If your iPhone has a curved plastic rear without the black band from the original iPhone, you’ve got an iPhone 3G or 3GS. Both models were sold in a black finish.

However, you can check for the shininess of the detailing on the back of your iPhone. On the 3GS, the Apple logo and the imprint below are the same shiny silver; on the 3G, the imprint is less shiny than the logo. Moreover, if it’s white, then you have got a 3GS.

The display can fit only 4 rows of app icons and a dock row, at the bottom.

  • iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s

The iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s both have a front glass and a rear glass. It came in black or white. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to identify the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s apart.

Look for a SIM tray on the right-hand side. The iPhone 4, was available both with and without a SIM tray. The iPhone 4s always has a SIM tray.

The display is similar to the previous model with 4 rows of app icons and a dock row, at the bottom.

  • iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 looks similar to the iPhone 4 and 4s but comes with a taller 4 inch display. It can fit five rows of app icons and a dock row, at the bottom, unlike the preceding models.

  •  iPhone 5s

The iPhone 5s looks largely identical to the iPhone 5, but has the Touch ID fingerprint scanner as an added feature. Moreover, the Home button is no longer the same. The square on it has disappeared — it’s just a plain circle.

On the white-front models you can see a shiny metal ring around the edge whereas in the black one, it is entirely black.

The color schemes are also different, with Silver, Gold and Space Grey replacing Black and White.

  • iPhone 5c

The iPhone 5c comes in a range of bright plastic colors and has a curved plastic back. Hence, it is very easy to spot. The colors include green, blue, yellow, red and white.

  • iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s

The 6-series was completely redesigned; rounded-off edges replaced the squarer look of previous phones. The screens were larger than earlier models. They measured 4.7in diagonally.

The iPhone 6 came in silver, gold, and Space Grey. whereas, The iPhone 6s came in rose gold as well as Silver, Gold, and Space Grey.

It is available in six colors and was the first iPhone to come in red.

The physical upgrades from the iPhone X are nearly impossible for a consumer to check. The glass back was reinforced to make it less prone to cracking, and the waterproof rating was increased from IP67 to IP68.

  • iPhone XS Max

The XS Max can be identified by its screen size, which has s mighty 6.5-inch display.

Like the other X-series handsets, it has got no Home button, and its screen has a notch at the top. It comes in Silver, Gold, and Space Grey.

  • iPhone 11
